Big Mood: A Night of 2010s R&B
A celebration of the new generation of artists injecting life into a genre left for dead by the late naughts.
In the nineties, R&B reached new heights with Billboard chart dominance from Boyz II Men, Destiny’s Child, TLC, En Vogue & dozens more. The trend continued into the 2000s with Usher, Nelly, Alicia Keys, and members of Destiny’s Child going solo, providing Gen Y & Z with some of today’s best throwback screamalongs. But by the end of the decade, the top artists turned to EDM as a source of inspiration — all but removing the “Blues” from the genre’s namesake and sourcing “Rythm” from guys named David Guetta… R&B became a shell of what it once was.
But at the turn of the 2010s, artists like Frank Ocean, The Weeknd, Miguel & Solange began to appear from the darkest corners of the club, sourcing inspiration from introspection, obsession, alienation & excess. This new wave of artists transformed R&B into the music choice for the hipster elite & reinserted the genre into the critically acclaimed territory that it belongs.
As 2019 comes to the end, we’re taking the time to revisit the decade’s R&B revival with BIG MOOD: a night dedicated to lean-fueled, autotune-laced, dimly lit R&B bangers. Hosted by our guy, Umami.
Featuring tracks from: The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Billie Eilish, Miguel, Young Thug, Lizzo, Jeremih, Trey Songz, Jhene Aiko, Khalid, Tinashe, Drake, Childish Gambino, 6lack, SZA, FKJ, Ty Dolla $ign, J Cole, SiR, Jhene Aiko, DRAM, Rae Sremmurd, Tyler, The Creator, Beyoncé, Ari Lennox, Majid Jordan, Brockhampton & More.
